Happy Canada Day09

This year Canada Day falls in the middle of the week so for a lot of us there is no long weekend.  But it is still a very important and significant holiday in Canada. The people across the country will be celebrating whether at home with families and friends or joining in the multitude of festivals in many cities.

On July 1, 1867, Canada became a self-governing dominion of Great Britain and a federation of four provinces: Nova Scotia; New Brunswick; Ontario; and Quebec. The anniversary of this date was called Dominion Day until 1982. Since 1983, July 1 has been officially known as Canada Day.

In many towns and cities, municipal governments organize a range of events, often outdoors. These include pancake breakfasts, parades, concerts, carnivals, festivals, firework displays and citizenship ceremonies for new Canadian citizens. The celebrations often have a patriotic mood. Canada’s national flag is widely displayed and a lot of people paint their faces red and white, which are Canada’s national colors. The celebrations in Ottawa, which is Canada’s capital city, are particularly exuberant.

I found this cute feathered friend yesterday.

feathery friend

This is like most duck species, there is a big difference in the way males (drakes) and females (hens) look. In order to attract a hen, the drake is much more colorful. For most of the year, he has a shiny green head, a white-ringed neck, brown chest and grey sides. The drake mallard also sports a brown back, black rump and tail.

The hen, on the other hand, is much less colourful. Her feathers are white and brown, which helps her blend in with her wetland surroundings. However, like the drake, she does have white and blue colouring on the speculum of her wings.

Welcoming Summer

Summer was welcomed by the Waterfront festival held annually at the beautiful Port Credit park grounds last night.  Though the predicted weather was not the best, Mother Nature decided to change her mind instead gave us one of the most beautiful evening to end spring.  I look forward to this annual festival because the city always very generously gives us, the spectators and locals alike, a collection of many famous talent collections of Canadian artists and this year is no exception.   Although they raised the gate ticket price it was worth it.  As a result of this favourable combination, hundreds turned out to take advantage of this local festival of Stars.

The festival opened with the Multi Juno Award winner the Sam Roberts Band and ended with Bruce Cockburn’s collected work from his 26 albums.  Other performers such as Kathleen Edwards, The Spoons, SKYDIGGERS, 54 40, Catherine Maclellan and numerous other performers contributed for another one very successful festival.

sometimes I wish it was june all year round
have you ever wondered what it would be like
just to bask at the warmth of the new spring sun
to walk barefoot in one’s garden
and witness all of nature’s glory
oh so sweet, so sweet my rose garden shows
for not one but an abundance of white
parading against the lush green canvas
but then I will miss the red, yellow, blue and purple
for they soon will show in July, August and September

My rose garden is now three years old.  I am glad now that I heeded away from all the horrors I’ve read about the hardship of maintaining a rose garden.  My hobby of photography led me to this new passion.  I never knew how I have been captivated by floral photography until now.  It’s funny isn’t it how one passion can lead us into many others.  As a result of this new obsession, I thought I’d share the beauty of these white roses before it’s demise.  What can I say?  It simply takes my breath away.  I will be posting the other colors as the new season progresses.

here is a quote for today:

Where flowers bloom so does hope.

Do you know the name of this spring flowering plant?

growing wild up north

As I was walking my dog Sandy, I saw a glimpse of yellow by my feet.

As ussual, armed with my handy Sony Cyber-shot, I simply had to take a photo

of this beautiful spring bloom.  I have no idea what it is called.  If you know, I would

really appreciate a note.  The plant is only about a foot in height with one bloom.

They grow in cluster near the lake, more specifically by Georgian Bay.

Here is a quote for the last week of spring:

Everything is blooming most recklessly; if it were voices instead of colors,

there would be an unbelievable shrieking into the heart of the night.

May 16 2009 Sunset at Sauble Beach

I find myself
inside the sky painting
infinity I face
by the lake
I call my heaven
each sunset
allows me to create
in my mind
a myriads of many levels
unspoken meanings
today I found
another burst of golden sky
watching in disbelief
the natural beauty
of dusk fast approaching
I take it in
for tomorrow
another magical display it will be

diner time

The catch of the day

It was a perfect spring day in June

I watch him as he prepares the lure

Who is this child which possess such patience

I stopped questioning

For today I was glad

He was with nature

Instead of the PC

He cast his line

Releasing it as the bait hit the water

Sat down patiently awaiting

I imagine that a simple tug

Then another

Would bring glee to his heart

Private anticipation

Waiting for the perfect time

The line tightened upon the water

It surely was a tug, and yes another

His heart racing

He held his breath

In perfect motion

Set that hook and catch the “Prize”

There was not one but six

He witnessed

Small mouth bass as they are called

But only one was determined

To get at that bait he used

He tried to loosen himself from the hook

But this young man was more determined

He could not help himself

A loud squeal he released with glee

He smiled with great pride

Admired the catch

But the real gift was the hours

He had spend by the lake side

He did not know

signs of spring

colors of spring

spring colors

What are these days we call spring

I cannot help but question

I use to ignore all the signs

But today, I could no longer

They are everywhere

Green  Green  Green

The warming breeze against my face

as I take my morning stroll

Not too far

Just around my little corner of the world

I am consciously bombarded

by the colors

some miniscule

as I look down

tiny new life

sprouting everywhere

My senses arouse once again

The movie of spring colors

Accompanied by the orchestra of

feathered friends in the background

once again the signs of new life

Spring make one hopeful of good things to come

A sense of renewal evident

My sense of sight hightened

spotting bright reds, yellow and green.

My sense of hearing tuned perfectly

to all the feather friends songs

my canvas now complete under the bright

spring sunburst of lights

My day forever

A   gift

i crave nothing more

than this life

America Idol Kris Allen: “Falling Slowly”

05/20/2009 at 6:08 pm | In American Idol Season 8, Music video | Leave a Comment

American Idol Season Finale………. and the winner is “Kris Allen” and Simon says, “he was getting tired of Kris being too humble?”

Sometimes personality and a person’s true self immerse……… oh “He is just a very easy to like.”  That ’s Kris.

Falling Slowly Lyrics:

Glen Hansard : Falling Slowly Lyrics

Songwriters: Irglova, Marketa; Hansard, Glen;

I don’t know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can’t react
And games that never amount
To more than they’re meant
Will play themselves out

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We’ve still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You’ll make it now

Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can’t go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I’m painted black
You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It’s time that you won

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We’ve still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice
You’ve made it now
Falling slowly sing your melody
I’ll sing along

Today I finally printed my books

My first bookOnce again, I stopped procrastinating and printed my very first book at Blurb.com.  I am such a perfectionist that it only took me a whole year to really

get my act together.  This book is a collection of my poetry and photographs from 2000 to 2008.

My second book

This is my second book I have put together as a sample portfolio of my photograph collection from my flickr account that I am most proud of.  Once again, this book took me a few months since I wanted it to be exactly how I’d imagine it from the very beginning.  My conscience is now guilt-free.  Of course, I’m already very busy with another project as I am writing this.  Hmmmm this project has a time limit of one month so there are no excuses.

Have a creative days ahead dear friends!

“It was an ideal spring day, a light blue sky, flecked with little fleecy white clouds drifting across
from west to east. The sun was shining very brightly, and yet there was an exhilarating nip in
the air, which set an edge to a man’s energy.”

Above and below:  Trillium flowers native to Northern Ontario,Canada

The white trillium has been Ontario’s provincial floral emblem since 1937. Its white blossom is associated with peace and hope.

The plant contains tannic acid and saponin. It was used by First Nations People and settlers as an antiseptic and a nerve tonic. The leaves were boiled in lard and applied to ulcers as a poultice, and also used to restrict gangrene. The roots were used to ease fevers and diarrhea. Another name for the plant used to be “birthroot,” originating from its use in easing the process of childbirth. However, no part of white trillium should be considered safe or edible for human consumption.

ontario-national-flower

This elegant spring flower blooms about the same time as robins return, thus, the name “wake-robin”. The plant is called a “trillium” because the flower parts occur in threes, along with a whorl of three, broad, egg-shaped leaves. The single, large, white flower, up to 10 cm (4 in.) across, perches upright at the top of a stout 10 cm – 40 cm (4 – 16 in.) high stalk. Three white petals form the flower, with three green sepals beneath. At the flower’s centre are six stamens and a six-lobed ovary with three styles. The white petals fade over time to a dull pinkish purple, becoming slightly transparent.

The leaves in this trillium species are longer than in the western trillium, and shorten more gradually to a point.

White trillium grows from a short thick rhizome (underground stem). The fruit is a round, greenish, berry-like capsule, 15 mm – 25 mm (1/2 – 1 in.) in diameter. This slightly angled, six-sided fruit has many brown seeds. When mature, the whole capsule falls off the plant.
